After losing to George Bush Jr, Albert Arnold Gore Jr. was not the type to have easily given up his battles. Al Gore made environmental advocacy popular, and in 2007, he won a Nobel Prize together with the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).
Skeptics of climate change abound, and I have some personal criticisms myself to the kind of fanaticism generated by organizations like Green Peace, for example, against the judicious use of GMOs. I just think the proper term should be conservation. Environmental preservation is very different and quite ignorant, in my opinion, compared to sustainable management.
Nonetheless, we all live in the same planet, and either preservation or management will have good and bad consequences. In the end, it's probably a good thing that there are people like Al Gore who remind us occasionally that our time here on Earth is limited, and we have to decide fast.

A week without pc
Hooray! Today, I get my online life back.
I got my laptop back from the repair shop. It had sticky keys before. So they have to disconnect the built-in keyboard and I have to plug in a USB keyboard. Ergo, it's not a portable netbook anymore. It's a glorified desktop. Pfft.
I also had the CPU of my desktop PC checked because it was not booting up. Inside the casing, the accumulated cobwebs proved months and weeks of utter neglect, and I felt sorry for it as if it were a leper rejected by his kin. The repair guy was able to troubleshoot the problem by simply restarting the CMOS, and I was a happy kid again.
So this week, I realized a few things: one, that an addiction (particularly, spending excess hours on twitter, facebook, and blogging) can be conquered, even if the subject is hesitant to quit at first. Yes, I'm talking to you, alcoholics and smokers.
Second, that while Google provides a nifty and rapid way of learning, it will not be helpful with my patient encounters later on. I have not seen, and will probably never see, a doctor seeing his patient at the wards and having to check with Google first about the correct diagnosis and proper medications.
In the end, it's all about perspective.

It's the start of the OB-GYN module next week. Looking at the tentative schedule, and from what the upperclassmen are saying, this stress-free weekend should be spent resting and taking stock of sleep-hours in preparation for the workload ahead.

For the next three weeks, I'll be seeing a lot of obstetric and gynecological diseases. Histopathology is my current waterloo, but I take it as a challenge to do better at it. It's pretty awesome to see tumors, cancer cells, and weird histological formations, but the task of identifying them one-by-one is daunting...
On another note, I still find it weird for some guys to consider OB-GYN as a medical specialty. It takes balls (pun intended) for these guys to compete in some girls' territory.
VMA winners of 2011
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards took place on August 28, at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, honoring the best music videos from the previous year. It was a good year for Adele and his handlers, having won the most awards (3), along with Katy Perry.
I'd say this year's VMA statues had been distributed much better. If you remember last year's VMA, Lady Gaga was the most-nominated artist in VMA history for a single year. She then lopsidedly took 8 wins out of 13 nominations.

Here's something that made me smile, well at least, the inner geek in me did.
The big one's a neutrophil, a kind of white blood cell (WBC) that roams around your body that becomes the first-responders to infections, mainly bacterial ones. One of its main roles is to eat up bacteria (phagocytosis), which it did to the Staphylococcus aureus seen on the video.
Amazingly, this clip was made on a 16-mm film way back in the 1950's by David Rogers at Vanderbilt University. It's pretty astounding how the clip survived this long, and made it to Youtube. Who knew.
